HTTPS proxy or HTTP proxy with CONNECT?

The term is often confusing. Here, an HTTPS proxy is a proxy you talk to over TLS: the connection between your computer and the proxy is encrypted, so nobody on your local network can see which sites you request. An ordinary HTTP proxy can also open HTTPS websites using CONNECT, but the first request to the proxy goes in plain text.

When you need it

  • On public Wi-Fi, where the local network should not see your proxy traffic.
  • With software that only accepts https:// proxy URLs.

Genuine HTTPS proxies are rare among public servers, so this list is much shorter than the HTTP list. If it is empty right now, an HTTP proxy with CONNECT or a SOCKS5 proxy will do the job for most tasks.

Example

curl --proxy https://IP:PORT --proxy-insecure https://example.com

Free proxies usually present self-signed certificates, so most clients need an option to skip certificate checks for the proxy itself.

Frequently asked questions

Running TLS on a proxy requires extra configuration, and most public proxies are misconfigured or compromised servers that only speak plain HTTP or SOCKS.

It encrypts the hop between you and the proxy. The proxy owner can still see where you go, so use HTTPS websites for anything sensitive.
